KICKBOXING

Kickboxing is an exciting way to enjoy martial arts, it is ideal for people of all ages and abilities. It doesn't matter if you have previous martial arts training or you are a new comer to the sport, whether self defence is your main priority or getting in shape and keeping fit, kickboxing could be what you are looking for.

Kickboxing is thought of as a relatively 'trendy' martial art. Many die hard martial artists do not consider it a valid style in itself. In fact kickboxing in one form or another has been around for many years. It is only in recent years that the term kickboxing has been used to describe this branch of combat which originated in America in the early seventies. It was developed by full contact karate fighters to help them compete with their Thai counter parts in competition.

Here at the Sheffield Academy of Martial Arts we have a comprehensive kickboxing syllabus that includes long and short range punches, kicks and blocks. All of the techniques are practical and are considered an asset for self defence as a well as being incorporated into a fitness regime through intense cardiovascular routines and co-ordination drills. Determination, self discipline, focus, and timing are a few of the qualities that are developed whilst training. All of the techniques are practised on pads and bags to develop speed, timing and power. For the more adventurous students there is the option of learning competition sparring; semi contact, light continuous, Full contact and K1 are taught.

Our comprehensive grading syllabus allows students to reach goals and realise their potential. Advanced students are taught to use and deal with a range of weapons, including knives and short sticks - this helps to build awareness and focus and helps the students to understand some of the possible dangers that could be faced outside the training hall.

The syllabus is really only a guide. Although three are specific requirements as to exactly what needs to be learnt for each grade, these are not absolute. Each student has their own personal abilities and their own personal preferences. Some students will be naturally be better at kicking and others will prefer to use their hands. Many students will not be especially interested in hard sparring and may prefer simply to become skilled kick boxers, without the combat side. The Martial Arts are a multi faceted area, it is not necessary to excel in them all (in fact it is extremely difficult!).

Little Dragons
  • BULLLYING

  • SHYNESS

  • LACK OF CONFIDENCE

  • FITNESS

  • BALANCE

  • DISCIPLINE

  • STRENGTH OF CHARACTER

One or more of the above may in some way affect our children!

Children are taught the same syllabus as the adults, however the 'Little Dragons' programme devised for them also focuses on early development including balance, confidence, motor neuron skills, co-ordination, discipline and determination as well as trying to raise their fitness levels. We also recognise that children are our most precious assets, so the 'Little Dragons' programme has been devised by instructors with over fifty years combined experience helping children reach their personal goals. Over 65% of adults who train with us now bring their children along too.

You can rest assured that SAMA children's classes are a fun and safe way  for your children to enter the martial arts and give them a head start in realising their potential.

Our academy provides specially designed classes for boys and girls from the age of 5 to14 years. These provide our younger members with a complete curriculum, focusing on discipline, personal confidence, self control and team work. Children automatically receive membership to the adult's class upon reaching the required age.

The martial arts training in these sessions emphasises the sporting aspects of the art, with optional competitions available throughout the year. We acknowledge the special training needs of the children; where adult clubs cannot offer the same commitment to its younger members. This often leads to the neglect of the child's learning development and when the child becomes bored, the instructor's and parents/guardians efforts are wasted.

We encourage children by encouraging the commitment of the parents. Personal effort on the part of the parent/guardian often ensures their regular attendance and so, progress can be achieved. The instructor is on hand to encourage and guide students, ensuring their discipline and safer training practices.. Children's classes include rest periods at the optimum time, to maintain the youngsters interest and safety.

KUNG FU

Here at Sheffield Academy of Martial Arts we have developed a programme that is designed to ensure that you or your child/children reach the ultimate goal of Black Sash.

We follow a syllabus designed to help develop co-ordination which originates from Lau Gar Kung fu set down by Master Jeremy Yau and the British Kung Fu Association.

The programme is based on respect, discipline, determination and confidence. For you or your child/children to gain maximum benefit is important to practise these life skills at home as well as in the Martial Arts classes.

As a parent/guardian you play a vital role in ensuring your child attends classes regularly with a clean and presentable uniform and by bringing to the attention of the instructor any problems or issues they can help you with.

As a student it is important that you realise that to attain the maximum benefit from your training you must attend regularly. Together working as a team we aim ensure that training is both enjoyable and beneficial.

Children's Student Creed

- I will develop myself in a positive manner and avoid anything that may reduce my mental growth or my physical health.

- I will develop self-discipline in order to bring out the best in myself and others.

- I will use what I learn in class constructively and defensively to help myself and my fellow human beings and never be abusive or offensive.

As a caring parent you can be sure of our commitment to provide the best possible training environment for your child. You can therefore recognise the need for us to accept your commitment to ensure your child attends regularly.
